Two emerging classical pianists, Zhihan Jiang and Yuhao Yan, present a joint recital featuring some of the most compelling works in piano literature, from Bach and Schumann to Janáček and Ravel.
Zhihan Jiang
Bach’s C sharp minor Prelude and Fugue BWV 849 is a work of emotional poignancy, consisting of a melancholic Prelude and a highly complex 5 voice Fugue. This is followed by the sounds of young Schumann, Abegg Variations Op.1.
Debussy depicts the brilliance and spectacle of the Paris fireworks. In the come morning is Ravel’s Alborada del grazioso, the playful and melodic attributes of which are heightened by extreme technical demands. Chopin’s first Ballade itself is a breathtaking narrative, one of striking originality and experiential depth. The first half concludes with Liszt’s Transcendental Etude no.10, “Appassionata”, a piece driven by passion and dramaticism.
Yuhao Yan
The second half of this program presents two essential works of Janáček and Schumann. Janáček’s In the Mists is an unsettling and volatile, but achingly personal piano cycle composed during a very difficult period of the Czech composer’s life.
To round out the program is Schumann’s Humoreske, a fiercely imaginative masterpiece with profound depth of emotion.
