“THE GREATER THE POWER, THE MORE DANGEROUS THE ABUSE”
Shakespeare’s Othello is a reflection on the nature of cruelty and envy: how far can a human being go in order to regain or conquer what they think they have lost or it has been denied to them, at what expense?
Othello the Moor, a valiant and renowned general employed by the Venetian government, has earned love and respect. It’s seen as an honour for him to serve and die for the State he serves, but it’s seen as a sin for him to love Desdemona. And when he promotes Cassio over Iago, the latter, seeking for revenge, starts whispering mistruths goading Othello into believing that Desdemona is Cassio’s lover. Events spiral madly out of control as prejudice, jealousy, pride, and paranoia take over Othello, who smothers the innocent Desdemona, the cause of his dishonour.
