Andrew Makepeace Ladd the 3rd (Martin Croft) and Melissa Gardner (Robyn Arthur) now in late middle age, look back over a lifetime of correspondence. After their childhood friendship, Andrew marries, becomes a successful attorney and U.S. Senator.

After a disastrous marriage, Melissa drinks more than she should and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually they have a brief affair and although it is too late for them both, they remain as spiritually close as only true lovers can be.
