After his ‘People’s Choice Award’ winning original play Twenty-Something debuted at the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival to sold-out audiences and following what feels like years of lockdown and isolation, Alistair Ward is back with his second show Drama School: a play.
What happens when one of the most prestigious acting schools in the world decides that their students need to compete to stay in the program? Drama School: a play nourishes the audience with insight into the lives of aspiring actors vying to succeed within a competitive and cut-throat industry, desperately trying to keep their hopes and dreams alive.
Pansy Productions presents seven acting students living together in the dorms of New York City, as they fight against the modern-day expectations of what it means to make it as an actor. Drawing inspiration from the writers’ own experience of relocating to Manhattan at age eighteen, each character struggles with their own internalised pressures and search for varied ways of managing the expectations placed upon them by their families, the college, the industry, and themselves.
“Alistair Ward masterfully captures the thoughts that many people face as they decide what’s important, who they want to be […and] who matters in their life.” —Milk Bar Magazine re. Twenty Something
With a focus on healthy male friendships, queer relationships and mental health struggles, these twenty-somethings are on their path to learning that it’s okay to ask for help in a world that has you competing with your peers.
